SUMMARY:WMRA's Books & Brews - Gregory Smithers\, author of The Water Carriers: A Journey Through Cherokee History and the Secret Life of Rivers
DESCRIPTION:WMRA’s November Books & Brews features Gregory Smithers\, author of The Water Carriers: A Journey Through Cherokee History and the Secret Life of Rivers. \nTuesday\, Nov. 10\, 2026 at 7pm. \nLive at Pale Fire Brewing Company in Harrisonburg\, and available later on WMRA’s Youtube Channel. \nSigned copies of The Water Carriers will be available at the event and online at Stone Soup Books. \nWMRA’s Books & Brews is made possible thanks to our series sponsor\, Gaines Group Architects. The Gaines Group has offices in Charlottesville and Harrisonburg. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book \nThe history of the Cherokee people is an epic story of survival and creativity. A tale usually told through the lens of Cherokee resistance to land-hungry colonists and the removal policy of Andrew Jackson\, it is that and so much more. Cherokee history connects us to deep time\, to Indigenous environmental knowledge\, and the future of a continent. \nThe Water Carriers—or ama danhtsisi\, in Cherokee—is a journey into worlds formed in the mists of “time immemorial.” Award-winning historian Gregory Smithers transports readers back to forgotten epochs when Southern Appalachia’s mountains soared as high as the Alps of Europe\, when dinosaurs roamed the earth\, and ancient oceans receded to make way for rivers. In Southern Appalachia\, rivers\, which Cherokees called Long Person—or Ganvhidv Yvwi—moved the earth and excavated mountains to reveal fertile valleys. Smithers highlights how Long Person drew Cherokees and their Indigenous ancestors to the water’s edge where they nurtured an enduring bond with the river. \nFrom their first tentative steps in small hunting and gathering bands to bustling aquapelagos—communities forged along rivers—The Water Carriers is a deeply-researched and elegantly written history that illuminates the importance of water carrier traditions in Cherokee history. In the The Water Carriers\, life pulses from mountaintops to distant seas\, and Cherokees remind us of a simple yet profoundly urgent truth: ama gvnida—“water is life.” \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author \nDr. Gregory Smithers received his Ph.D. in History from the University of California\, Davis. He currently lives in Richmond\, Virginia\, where he teaches American History at Virginia Commonwealth University. His Research focuses on the histories of indigenous people and African Americans from the eighteenth century to present. His work is devoted to narrating the past in ways that connect with issues of social justice\, environmental sustainability\, and racial and gender equality.

SUMMARY:Voices of the Shenandoah River with Q&A | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
DESCRIPTION:A selection of short films benefitting Friends of the Shenandoah River\n\nThere will be a silent auction\, a 50/50 raffle and games in the Alamo lobby prior to the screening. \nAn in-theater Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening. \nAbout Friends of the Shenandoah River \nThe Friends of the Shenandoah River is a volunteer\, non-profit\, scientific organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of the Shenandoah River and its tributaries. \nThe group was founded in 1989 by a group of like-minded Shenandoah Valley citizens and scientists concerned about the rapid decline in water quality of their beloved Shenandoah River. While the fish kills of the 80’s and 90’s would not compare to those of the next decade (which depleted 80% of the adult smallmouth and sunfish populations)\, the danger signs were all too evident: industrial pollution from the Avtex Fibers plant; sediment and fertilizer runoff; livestock polluting the feeder streams; water turbidity; lesions and sores on fish; the stench of under-treated sewage. Clearly\, action was needed\, but where to begin? This nucleus of science-minded Friends knew just where to start—with the science. \nLaunched in 1989\, the FOSR grass-roots water quality monitoring and testing program was the first of its kind in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Today\, in its 23rd year of continuous operation\, the program deploys 72 FOSR volunteers who wade in\, literally\, with bi-monthly water samplings along 150 miles of the Shenandoah and its tributaries\, from Port Republic\, VA to Harpers Ferry\, WV. The samples are processed through a full-time FOSR laboratory at Shenandoah University\, resulting in a huge and invaluable database of sampling \nOur event includes four films \nChessie’s Big Adventure: A Trip Down the South River Watershed (Dir: David Verde\, 14 minutes) Join Chessie the duck on a 365-mile journey from high in the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay. On the way\, Chessie learns that waters from the South River flow into the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Viewers learn the watershed concept and how connections among land\, water\, and communities mean that we all live downstream. \nSurf and Turf: A Chesapeake Bay Watershed Story (Dir: Eric Braker\, 11 minutes) A celebration of the connection between land and water. “Surf and Turf” embarks on a captivating journey from the inland mountains and headwater streams of the Chesapeake Bay watershed to the wide-open\, salty expanse of the Bay itself. \nFertile Fields\, Fragile Waters: Farming and the Fate of the Shenandoah (Dir: Celia Irene Cooley\, 39 minutes) Fertile Fields\, Fragile Waters explores the uncertain future of farming in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley\, where industrial agriculture strains soil and waterways. Farmers\, scientists\, and river stewards confront the stakes and the promise of regenerative solutions. \nRiver Maid (Dir: Colin J. Mason\, 17 minutes) River Maid is a lyrical\, song-like tale of an aging widower who is numbed by loss and marking time until the end. He encounters a mermaid who re-awakens his old sense of adventure.
