Since the 1960s\, Northern bobwhite populations in Virginia have been in steep decline. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Wayne Theatre on Tuesday\, April 21st at 7 pm for Chris Bolgiano’s Science Talk Forest Forensics: Finding Clues to the Past in Our Woods Today. \nWell over a century after the establishment of national forests across the Appalachian Mountains\, their origin story has faded from common memory. After all\, trees blanket our mountains down into hollows and up over ridges far into the blue distance. But as William Faulkner said\, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” The past of our forests remains very much present today\, and will for centuries to come. This talk will illustrate why. \nChris Bolgiano joined the Library Faculty of then-Madison College in 1974. Upon getting tenure\, she promptly resigned to become a freelance writer. James Madison University graciously saved her from starving by hiring her as Adjunct Faculty to develop a Library Special Collections Department. This played right into her hands by giving her authority to identify\, collect and study the historical resources that inform her writing. Now long retired\, she cultivates JMU’s excellent Special Collections and Reference Librarians. \nAbout the Science Talk Series:\nThe Wayne Theatre presents “Science Talks” in partnership with the Virginia Museum of Natural History as part of its Signature Speaker Series. SUMMARY:Science Talk! Native Bees in Local Landscapes with UVA's T'ai Roulston
DESCRIPTION:Appreciating and Promoting Native Bees in Local Landscapes with T’ai Roulston\nMarch 17\, 2026\, 7 pm at the Wayne Theatre \nTopic: \nThe University of Virginia’s T’ai Roulston will highlight research on and explore the natural history of Virginia’s native bee species. Wild bee species pollinate the bulk of native plants in Virginia’s wild areas\, are the most frequent pollinators of home gardens\, and often dominate pollination on small farms. They work alongside European honey bees pollinating major crops on large farms\, but only if the broader landscape supports their populations. This talk will describe some of the different life histories of native bee species\, the challenges they face in our landscape\, and some things we can do to help keep them around. \nSpeaker: \nT’ai H. Roulston is a research associate professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia and the Curator of the State Arboretum in Boyce\, Virginia. He has worked with UVA for 25 years\, and his research focuses primarily on insect ecology and conservation. Professor Roulston and collaborators have found and mapped a population of the endangered rusty patched bumble bee in the mountains between West Virginia and Virginia\, a population widely separated from its larger population in the upper Midwest. He and his graduate student Kate LeCroy have documented the declines of native mason bees in the Mid Atlantic with the proliferation of non-native mason bees. He is now undertaking a project to document remaining butternut trees in Virginia and determine if there any pockets of remaining trees showing resistance to butternut canker\, the primary disease killing them. \nAn arboretum is a plot of land on which many different trees or shrubs are grown for study or display. The State Arboretum of Virginia stands in the central 172 acres of Blandy Experimental Farm\, located in Boyce\, VA (near Winchester). Visitors can explore labelled tree and shrub collections that date back the early 1930’s from all over the world. DESCRIPTION:Storytelling and Watershed Science: Premiering “Chessie’s Big Adventure” \nUpdate: the first 50 people to arrive at the Wayne Theatre will receive a small “Chessie” duckie! Tell your friends! \nYellow rubber duckie with SRWC logo – first 50 arrivals to the Science Talk get one free!\nHigh in the Blue Ridge Mountains south of Waynesboro\, water begins its journey to the Chesapeake Bay. To illustrate the hydrologic* connection made by the South River\, a rubber duck named “Chessie” travels the length of the South River and beyond. \nTogether with videographer David Verde\, the South River Watershed Coalition (SRWC) produced this video to teach the science of watersheds through storytelling. Inspired by a 1960s film called “Paddle To The Sea”\, our story uses Chessie\, a character we follow on an adventure from the headwaters of South River over 300 miles to the ocean. Along the way\, Chessie encounters landscapes\, wildlife\, and communities connected by rivers and their history. \nIn addition to premiering the 20-minute video\, videographer David Verde and SRWC President Tom Benzing will explain the production process. In addition\, the SRWC has secured the rights from the National Film Board of Canada to show “Paddle To The Sea”\, the inspiration for this production. \n*hydrologic: dealing with the occurrence\, circulation\, distribution\, and properties of the waters of the earth and its atmosphere. \nAngel David Verde is a full-time filmmaker and award winning visual creative. He has over 15 years experience in TV\, Film\, production\, founding DV Entertainment in 2010. He specializes in non-fiction story driven projects\, outdoor adventure\, and natural history and conservancy films and videos. David has been working alongside Dave Hirschman and the South River Watershed Coalition since the inception of the South River Currents video series starting in 2020. The mission\, goals\, and outreach the videos produced for the SRWC aim to achieve\, strike a deeply personal and fulfilling chord that David and his team feel truly privileged to get to be a part of. \nOutside of his professional endeavors\, David is an avid waterman and passionate outdoors person\, a Honduran Immigrant\, and a U.S. Air Force Veteran. In his spare time\, he enjoys whitewater standup paddle boarding\, river surfing\, scuba diving\, skiing\, amateur astronomy\, and letterpress printmaking. \nTom Benzing\, SRWC President\, lives on Porterfield Run\, his watershed address on a small tributary to the South River in Augusta County. He is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University’s School of Integrated Sciences and serves as a trustee on the board of the Virginia Museum of Natural History. He enjoys fishing\, hiking\, and traveling. \nThe Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro presents “Science Talks” in partnership with the Virginia Museum of Natural History as part of its Signature Speaker Series. These processes overlap with the comprehensive planning tasks of public engagement\, data analysis\, visioning\, and recommendations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHousing Plan\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHousing Plans recommend housing strategies for jurisdictions. Effective Housing Plans work to improve residents’ quality of life and make housing more affordable. These processes overlap with the comprehensive planning tasks of public engagement\, data analysis\, visioning\, and recommendations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlan Process\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCreating Waynesboro’s Comprehensive Plan follows a 5-step structure that overlaps with public and stakeholder engagement. SUMMARY:Science Talk! John E. Ross: Here’s to the Weather Warriors!
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Tuesday\, November 11th\, at 7 pm for a special Veteran’s Day Science Talk at the Wayne Theatre. \nJohn E. Ross will give a talk titled Here’s to the Weather Warriors! \nAll was ready for D-day. Aboard ships steaming in the English Channel\, thousands of troops waited anxiously. In their camps by air fields\, hundreds of paratroopers sat sharpening bayonets and writing that last-minute letter home. Overhead droned hundreds of bombers and fighters bound for targets behind the beaches. At SHAEF’s advanced headquarters\, generals and admirals hashed out final details and worried about the one element of the invasion beyond their control – the weather. If the forecast was wrong\, D-day would fail. \nIke’s weatherman was James Martin Stagg. The US Army Air Force\, the Royal Navy\, and the British Met Office each prepared independent weather forecasts for D-day from data gathered by weather reconnaissance aircraft\, ships in the north Atlantic\, weathermen who fled Nazi’s invasion of Belgium but parachuted back home\, and interception of German weather reports. Stagg’s job was to meld them into one forecast and it absolutely had to be right. \nHad the forecast been wrong\, D-day would have failed. At least one year would have been required to gather men and materials to mount a second attempt. The delay would have meant that the Russians would have occupied all of Germany – no West Germany. Communists\, the strongest force in the French resistance\, would have dominated the French national assembly – no NATO. Imagine world history without West Germany and NATO. \n  \nJohn E. Ross\, the author of The Forecast for D-day and the Weatherman behind Ike’s Greatest Gamble\, interviewed many men and women who actually made the pivotal forecast as well as a German meteorologist who provided forecasts for the Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht in France. The book has been widely quoted in D-day anniversary stories by USA Today\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Weather Channel\, BBC and Associated Press-Europe.  \nAmong the reasons for writing the book\, John wanted to express gratitude to all those veterans and the Grey Berets of today\, who quietly and without recognition provide tactical and strategic weather forecasts on which successful military campaigns rely. \nJohn is no stranger to Waynesboro. He was the founding co-chair of the Center for Coldwaters Restoration which was largely responsible for generating the opportunity for the Virginia Museum of Natural History to locate a proposed branch museum in downtown Waynesboro. \n  \nIf you can’t make it in person\, you can find stream the live video on both the Wayne Theatre and VMNH Facebook pages. DESCRIPTION:Our second Science Talk of the series on Tuesday\, October 21st features Dr Joe Keiper\, Executive Director at the Virginia Museum of Natural History. \n  \nHistoric Bird Collections: A Time Machine for Bird Conservation and a Gateway for Avian Appreciation \nTopic Details: \nDr. Keiper will talk about how to get into birding and citizen science\, and delve into the values of historic ornithology collections in museums. (Ornithology is the scientific study of birds.) \nSpeaker: \nDr. Joe B. Keiper is Executive Director of the Virginia Museum of Natural History. When he was a museum curator\, he was deeply involved in the biology of invertebrate animals\, but maintained a long-standing passion for birding. He interned at Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge in the summers of 1992 and 1993 where he worked on conservation projects targeting the endangered piping plover\, and was a Teaching Assistant for ornithology at Kent State University for four years following that time. DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off the series on Tuesday\, September 16th with Marshall Boyd\, Research & Collections Technician at the Virginia Museum of Natural History. \nHis talk is titled What’s in a Name? How Taxonomy Fuels the World of Museums. \nTopic: Taxonomy (the science of naming\, describing\, and classifying organisms into\ngroups based on shared characteristics) plays a key role helping scientists in museums\nto categorize specimens in order to study the relationship between each described\ngroup. Many names within taxonomy come from describing the specimen itself using\nphysical attributes\, the habitat in which it lives\, etc. It could even be named after the\npeople who discovered it! This presentation will give just a small step into the world of\nnatural history museums\, the collections from behind the scenes\, and the work that\ngoes into describing a new species. \nSpeaker: Marshall Boyd is a Research and Collections Technician at the Virginia\nMuseum of Natural History in Martinsville\, VA. He has a long background in biology\nstarting from an early age\, always having a passion for the outside world and a\nconstant curiosity about everything concerning zoology (the scientific study of animals).\nMarshall studied forest birds as a master’s student at Salisbury University earning his\ndegree in 2015. Later he was an adjunct faculty member for local Maryland community\ncolleges before discovering his passion for natural history museum work at the\nSmithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington\, D.C. Marshall worked within the\nInvertebrate Zoology department for several years where he fueled his interests in\nzoology\, eventually leading him to his current position at the Virginia Museum of Natural\nHistory. SUMMARY:South River Preserve Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:City of Waynesboro Parks and Recreation invites you to attend the formal dedication of the South River Preserve! \nThis project came into fruition with funding from the DuPont settlement. The purpose was to create and improve habitat for fish\, birds\, and pollinators that were impacted by mercury contamination as well as improve water quality. \nThe project is complete and it is easy to look out on its blooming meadows and see that birds\, butterflies\, and bugs of all sorts are already calling it home. Fishermen are happily casting for the “big one” and fish are finding new places to hide. Beyond these goals\, the South River Preserve provides a new respite for residents and visitors alike. \nThe project removed acres of asphalt from a dilapidated parking lot and replaced them with meadows and trees. Visitors can enjoy the spectacularly improved views and also the sounds of birds chirping and bees buzzing. It’s a new experience and we want to celebrate it! \nPlease join us on August 21 at 1:30pm at the South River Preserve at 101 Short Street. \nThere will be several speakers\, light refreshments\, and an optional short tour highlighting the improvements.

SUMMARY:Science Talk! Revitalizing an EPA Brownfield: South River Preserve and Rockfish Run
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jessica Slagle\, Stormwater Engineer at Timmons Group \nTopic: Revitalizing an EPA Brownfield – South River Preserve and Rockfish Run \nJoin us at 7 pm on Tuesday\, April 29th\, at the Wayne Theatre for a Science Talk presented by The Timmons Group. \nJessica Slagle will give a presentation on the creation and revitalization of the South River Preserve\, adjacent to Constitution Park. \nMore than 450\,000 brownfields (lands that are abandoned or underused due to concerns about contamination) have been identified by the EPA in the U.S. for redevelopment and reuse\, one of which is the South River within the City of Waynesboro\, Virginia. Previously owned by Dupont\, the river and surrounding areas have been impacted by industrial practices and the presence of hazardous substances\, pollutants\, and contaminants. In conjunction with the City of Waynesboro and Anhold Associates Landscape Architecture and Planning\, Timmons Group developed plans to rehabilitate the South River Preserve and Rockfish Run for recreation\, habitat\, and ecological uplift. The South River Preserve site received funding as part of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) program to remediate mercury contamination downstream of a decommissioned DuPont facility. Given the state of the river and Brownfield requirements\, many options were considered for implementation to improve water quality\, wildlife habitat\, and create an area for the community to safely interact with the environment. \nIn addition\, Rockfish Run was identified as a stream restoration opportunity for the City of Waynesboro\, Virginia in conjunction with the South River Preserve. Rockfish Run converges with the South River and due to watershed development\, it was contributing excessive sediment into the river. The restoration created ecological uplift and habitat for local wildlife\, as well as improved utility conditions\, and will provide educational opportunities for years to come. \nThis presentation will discuss the project in entirety – from the original contamination to project planning and design\, all the way through implementation.\nAbout Our Guest Speaker\nJessica Slagle is a Project Engineer in the Stormwater Services Group at Timmons Group in Richmond\, Virginia. She was born and raised in Asheville\, North Carolina. She attended Virginia Tech to study Biological Systems Engineering and graduated in 2019. Jessica has a passion for working outdoors and enjoys investigating a variety of stormwater and ecological systems. She currently focuses on stream restoration at Timmons Group\, but has experience in regulatory compliance\, stormwater management design\, and floodplain analysis. Stream restoration combines many of her interests\, including problem solving and environmental rehabilitation\, and allows for the ecological uplift within severely degraded water systems. \nScience Talks are free and open to the public\, with a “donate what you will” to the Wayne Theatre for hosting. SUMMARY:Basic Park on the South River Youth-Only Stocked Trout Program 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) has designated the South River running through Basic Park in Waynesboro as Youth-Only Stocked Trout Waters from April 1 through June 15. \nOnly youth age 15 and under will be allowed to fish during that time period. Adults can assist youth only by baiting the hook\, casting\, and removing the fish from the hook. Adults cannot assist with setting the hook or retrieving the fish. The daily creel limit shall be 3 trout. Adults assisting youth are not required to have a fishing license or a trout license. Parking or access fees may be required at some locations. \nDWR plans to stock Basic Park on April 3\, April 18\, and May 1. Stocking times may vary depending on the distance from the hatchery to the receiving water. DWR will strive to stock between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. DWR may postpone or change the date of any of these stocking events due to circumstances that compromise the resource or public safety.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Angel Garcia \nTopic: To Be Determined \nPlease save the date to join us at at 7 pm on Tuesday\, March 18th\, at the Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro for a Science Talk by Dr. Angel Garcia\, JMU Assistant Professor of Ethnogeology & Karst Science. \nDr. Garcia is a Boricua (Puerto Rican) geologist interested in ethnogeology\, cave and karst science\, place-based education\, and increasing diversity within geosciences. His undergraduate degree is from Universidad Ana G. Mendez in Puerto Rico\, where he majored in Environmental Sciences with a minor in Marine Biology. He went on to graduate school at the University of Vermont\, where he received an MS degree in Geology\, focusing on geochemistry\, and then to Arizona State University for his doctoral degree in Geological Sciences\, focusing on ethnogeology about culturally framed geological interpretations among long-term residents in the Dominican and Puerto Rican karst. In 2020 he was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Geology and Environmental Science at James Madison University (Harrisonburg\, VA). \nWe will have more details about Dr. Garcia’s presentation topic closer to the date\, so stay tuned! \nScience Talks are free and open to the public\, with a “donate what you will” to the Wayne Theatre for hosting.
