SUMMARY:South River Preserve Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:City of Waynesboro Parks and Recreation invites you to attend the formal dedication of the South River Preserve! \nThis project came into fruition with funding from the DuPont settlement. The purpose was to create and improve habitat for fish\, birds\, and pollinators that were impacted by mercury contamination as well as improve water quality. \nThe project is complete and it is easy to look out on its blooming meadows and see that birds\, butterflies\, and bugs of all sorts are already calling it home. Fishermen are happily casting for the “big one” and fish are finding new places to hide. Beyond these goals\, the South River Preserve provides a new respite for residents and visitors alike. \nThe project removed acres of asphalt from a dilapidated parking lot and replaced them with meadows and trees. Visitors can enjoy the spectacularly improved views and also the sounds of birds chirping and bees buzzing. It’s a new experience and we want to celebrate it! \nPlease join us on August 21 at 1:30pm at the South River Preserve at 101 Short Street. \nThere will be several speakers\, light refreshments\, and an optional short tour highlighting the improvements.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jessica Slagle\, Stormwater Engineer at Timmons Group \nTopic: Revitalizing an EPA Brownfield – South River Preserve and Rockfish Run \nJoin us at 7 pm on Tuesday\, April 29th\, at the Wayne Theatre for a Science Talk presented by The Timmons Group. \nJessica Slagle will give a presentation on the creation and revitalization of the South River Preserve\, adjacent to Constitution Park. \nMore than 450\,000 brownfields (lands that are abandoned or underused due to concerns about contamination) have been identified by the EPA in the U.S. for redevelopment and reuse\, one of which is the South River within the City of Waynesboro\, Virginia. Previously owned by Dupont\, the river and surrounding areas have been impacted by industrial practices and the presence of hazardous substances\, pollutants\, and contaminants. In conjunction with the City of Waynesboro and Anhold Associates Landscape Architecture and Planning\, Timmons Group developed plans to rehabilitate the South River Preserve and Rockfish Run for recreation\, habitat\, and ecological uplift. The South River Preserve site received funding as part of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) program to remediate mercury contamination downstream of a decommissioned DuPont facility. Given the state of the river and Brownfield requirements\, many options were considered for implementation to improve water quality\, wildlife habitat\, and create an area for the community to safely interact with the environment. \nIn addition\, Rockfish Run was identified as a stream restoration opportunity for the City of Waynesboro\, Virginia in conjunction with the South River Preserve. Rockfish Run converges with the South River and due to watershed development\, it was contributing excessive sediment into the river. The restoration created ecological uplift and habitat for local wildlife\, as well as improved utility conditions\, and will provide educational opportunities for years to come. \nThis presentation will discuss the project in entirety – from the original contamination to project planning and design\, all the way through implementation.\nAbout Our Guest Speaker\nJessica Slagle is a Project Engineer in the Stormwater Services Group at Timmons Group in Richmond\, Virginia. She was born and raised in Asheville\, North Carolina. She attended Virginia Tech to study Biological Systems Engineering and graduated in 2019. Jessica has a passion for working outdoors and enjoys investigating a variety of stormwater and ecological systems. She currently focuses on stream restoration at Timmons Group\, but has experience in regulatory compliance\, stormwater management design\, and floodplain analysis. Stream restoration combines many of her interests\, including problem solving and environmental rehabilitation\, and allows for the ecological uplift within severely degraded water systems. \nScience Talks are free and open to the public\, with a “donate what you will” to the Wayne Theatre for hosting. SUMMARY:Basic Park on the South River Youth-Only Stocked Trout Program 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) has designated the South River running through Basic Park in Waynesboro as Youth-Only Stocked Trout Waters from April 1 through June 15. \nOnly youth age 15 and under will be allowed to fish during that time period. Adults can assist youth only by baiting the hook\, casting\, and removing the fish from the hook. Adults cannot assist with setting the hook or retrieving the fish. The daily creel limit shall be 3 trout. Adults assisting youth are not required to have a fishing license or a trout license. Parking or access fees may be required at some locations. \nDWR plans to stock Basic Park on April 3\, April 18\, and May 1. Stocking times may vary depending on the distance from the hatchery to the receiving water. DWR will strive to stock between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. DWR may postpone or change the date of any of these stocking events due to circumstances that compromise the resource or public safety.

His undergraduate degree is from Universidad Ana G. Mendez in Puerto Rico\, where he majored in Environmental Sciences with a minor in Marine Biology. He went on to graduate school at the University of Vermont\, where he received an MS degree in Geology\, focusing on geochemistry\, and then to Arizona State University for his doctoral degree in Geological Sciences\, focusing on ethnogeology about culturally framed geological interpretations among long-term residents in the Dominican and Puerto Rican karst. In 2020 he was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Geology and Environmental Science at James Madison University (Harrisonburg\, VA). \nWe will have more details about Dr. Garcia’s presentation topic closer to the date\, so stay tuned! \nScience Talks are free and open to the public\, with a “donate what you will” to the Wayne Theatre for hosting. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Wil Orndorff \nTopic: Water is Water: the Fuzzy Distinction between Surface and Groundwater in the Shenandoah Valley \nPlease join us at at 7 pm on Tuesday\, February 18th\, at the Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro for his presentation on the effect extended periods of drought have on groundwater. \nWil Orndorff is the Karst Protection Coordinator for the Virginia Natural Heritage Karst Program in the Department of Conservation and Recreation and on the Board of Directors for the Karst Waters Institute. He has a Masters degree in Geology from Virginia Tech focusing on structural geology and tectonics\, and his career has led him down an interdisciplinary path that includes hydrology\, biology\, geomorphology\, and analysis of spatial data. \nKarst is a type of landscape where the dissolving of the bedrock has created sinkholes\, sinking streams\, caves\, springs\, and other characteristic features. Most karst was formed as carbonate bedrock – limestone\, dolomite\, or marble – dissolved by mildly acidic waters over thousands of years. Much of this process took place below ground\, forming networks of interconnected caves. Most of the state’s Karst is found in Virginia’s Valley and Ridge Province. Complex underground drainage networks in karst commonly extend over large areas and beneath surface drainage divides. Precipitation enters these groundwater systems both by infiltration through soils developed over carbonate bedrock and by runoff into features such as sinkholes. Once underground\, these “karst waters” flow through networks of caves\, and combine to emerge at springs. Karst hydrologists undertake the tricky business of mapping connections between these features to define “karst watersheds”\, which typically refer to a particular spring or cave stream. \nWil\, a native of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia\, grew up looking for caves on the family farm and adjacent abandoned quarry. Introduced to formal caving work at the age of 18\, his interest in caves\, karst waters\, and geology grew into both a career and a life-long passion. With a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins and a masters in geology from Virginia Tech focusing on Appalachian tectonics in hand\, Wil entered the professional karst world as a self-employed consultant performing karst analyses of the potential impacts of a proposed high voltage power line corridor on karst springs and bat habitat along its path. Becoming Virginia’s Karst Protection Coordinator became Wil’s career\, and afforded him the opportunity to do the work he loved\, protecting the resources he cared about. The nature of the job turned Wil into a jack of all trades karst professional who wears many hats: geologist\, hydrologist\, conservationist\, educator\, explorer\, and\, increasingly\, biologist. His work has resulted in the establishment of two natural area preserves protecting significant caves and additions of several tracts containing significant caves to existing preserves. Through the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s environmental project review\, Wil has helped to avoid or mitigate impacts to hundreds of caves with the help of the Virginia Speleological Survey\, with whom he is a director at large in his spare time. \nWil is the 2019 Recipient of the Karst Award from Karst Waters Institute. Prior to Lobby Day\, a Zoom call will be hosted to discuss active legislation and budget requests\, provide fact sheets\, lobbying tips\, best practices\, and answer any questions to ensure participants feel comfortable. \nThe event will kick off at the parish hall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, a short walking distance from the General Assembly Building and Virginia Capitol\, from 8:00 a.m.–8:30 a.m. CBF will schedule in-person meetings with legislators and fellow advocates throughout the morning. When a menacing poem lands in her inbox\, posted by an unknown group of climate activists\, Aliyah is plunged into an undercover mission in the dead of a Wisconsin winter. In this and other cases\, she must navigate awkward alliances with the likes of a geologist rabbi\, an imposing small town public works director\, and a disgruntled botanist with a vendetta. Along the way\, Aliyah draws inspiration from the family stories of her great grandmother\, Packy\, a root doctor in a Black\, rural Georgia community before the family migrated north in the 1950s.
