Virginia DEQ (with VADGIF) sampled fish and sediments in 2007 as part of the 100-year Mercury Monitoring Plan. Fish (18 stations) showed highest mercury in a smallmouth bass (4.65 ppm) and generally elevated levels along the South Fork; stocked trout and controls were below 0.5 ppm. Sediment sampling (guzzling method) found hotspots up to 42.8 ppm.
