This technical briefing summarizes a South River Pond Pilot Study evaluating a biochar (carbon) sediment amendment applied in 2011 to reduce mercury bioavailability. Monitoring through 2013 measured inorganic and methylmercury in surface water, pore water, sediments, and biota. Results show decreased surface-water and pore-water mercury and reduced MeHg in several organisms; no adverse effects were observed.
