Serving Waynesboro, Augusta County & the Shenandoah Valley

This slide presentation (Feb 8, 2005) reports a 2004 caged clam study on the South River Parks and Pond reaches. Clams were deployed in July and recovered in late September to measure total mercury and methylmercury. Results show downstream increases near a DuPont outfall and an oxbow, elevated concentrations in Dooms Mill Pond, and methylation-driven Hg increases; survival was 55–80%.
