Serving Waynesboro, Augusta County & the Shenandoah Valley

Slide deck (7 October 2014) describes pilot studies testing biochar and activated carbon as floodplain soil amendments to limit mercury uptake. Laboratory results showed biochar reduced methylmercury concentrations in juvenile earthworms and in some soils, with no adverse effects on earthworms or plants. Planned field phases include caged-earthworm trials across South River sites and larger field applications.
