Serving Waynesboro, Augusta County & the Shenandoah Valley

Laboratory mesocosm experiments tested how sediment amendments (Sedimite and Cowboy-brand biochar) affect leaf-litter processing by amphipods and mercury bioavailability. Treatments compared amendment type, biochar particle size, and time since mixing (0, 2, 4 months), with bioaccumulation kinetics measured over 20 days. Sedimite reduced detrital processing and both amendments—especially Sedimite and finer biochar—reduced early mercury bioavailability.
