The South River Watershed Coalition was established as the South River Science Team to serve as a focal point for technical issues associated with mercury found in the South River and downstream waterways.
In 2022, the remediation efforts were completed through the City of Waynesboro, with the group shifting its focus to protecting the watershed.
As part of the previous remediation process, a Remediation Advisory Panel (RAP) was established as a way for community members and stakeholder groups to discuss their viewpoints as remediation progresses. RAP participants are affiliated with organizations such as:
