Serving Waynesboro, Augusta County & the Shenandoah Valley

This two-year (2003–2004) investigation at the Augusta Forestry Center compared mercury in floodplain garden soils (4.2–78 mg/kg) and a nearby control to mercury levels in common vegetables. Most fresh tissues were below method detection/quantitation limits; a few 2003 carrot samples were elevated, likely influenced by flooding. Calculated screening values indicate measured traces are below health-risk thresholds.
