Serving Waynesboro, Augusta County & the Shenandoah Valley

Conference poster summarizing a 2014 biomonitoring study of mercury (Hg) in chickens and eggs raised on a contaminated South River floodplain near Waynesboro, VA. Hg was measured in eggs, muscle, liver, gizzard, feathers, and blood; risk metrics (hazard quotients and allowable meals) indicate eggs and muscle are acceptable, while liver and gizzard may need consumption limits. Non-lethal blood and feather sampling showed promise for some breeds.
