Serving Waynesboro, Augusta County & the Shenandoah Valley

This fact sheet summarizes a 2008–2011 South River Science Team study that analyzed mercury in edible tissues of waterfowl, game, and snapping turtles (160 samples). Using conservative assumptions and USEPA methods, researchers estimated safe annual consumption in 8-ounce meals for each species and concluded that, at those limits, eating these animals from the South River watershed is not expected to pose a health concern.
