Serving Waynesboro, Augusta County & the Shenandoah Valley

Slide presentation reporting preliminary experiments on effects of biochar on stream benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Field colonization trays and eighteen microcosm exposures compared control, large and small biochar particles, and a copper reference. Endpoints included drift, immigration, survival, composition, and community metabolism; biochar markedly reduced metabolism, with effects comparable in magnitude to copper.
