Laboratory and column experiments evaluated solid-phase reactive media (biochars, clays, zero-valent iron, elemental sulfur and activated carbon) to remove or stabilize mercury from South River sediments and floodplain soils. Tests assessed static and dynamic flow performance, potential methylmercury formation, longevity of treatment, and release under changing geochemical conditions, identifying promising materials and trade-offs.
