University of Waterloo researchers evaluated passive treatment media (biochar, clays, zero-valent iron, activated carbon and combinations) to remove or stabilize mercury from South River (Virginia) sediments and floodplain soils. Batch, column and humidity-cell tests assessed Hg removal, long-term binding, and methylmercury potential. Biochar columns achieved sustained >98% aqueous Hg removal; some biochars released organics or sulfate that could promote methylation.
