Laboratory and field experiments characterize mercury in South River (VA) riverbank and floodplain sediments. Methods include SEM/TEM, XAS, sequential extraction, batch resuspension, saturated column leaching, and humidity cycling. Results show highly variable Hg concentrations, predominant Hg–S associations (cinnabar/metacinnabar or thiol-bound), colloidal transport, acid-enhanced release, and greater percent mobilization from sediments nearest base flow.
