This technical note describes a hand-powered bilge-pump method developed by VA DEQ and the South River Science Team to collect homogeneous bed sediment for mercury (Hg), TOC and particle-size analyses. The protocol captures a thin sediment layer, uses staged settling and decanting to remove sand, and yields about 50 g dry sediment per sample for the 10-year 2007 monitoring event.
