Serving Waynesboro, Augusta County & the Shenandoah Valley

The South River Science Team conducted a 2008 floodplain soil survey, collecting over 1,200 samples along 25 miles of the South River to map mercury distribution. Samples were analyzed for total mercury, organic carbon, grain size, moisture, and methylmercury in wetlands. Most soils exceeded Virginia background but were below USEPA residential screening levels; a few higher locations were identified.
